In London I feel more myself again. When the train reaches King’s Cross, I switch into local mode, picking up the pace to my usual city march and ignoring the hostile glares of homebound commuters furious I’ve deigned to bring a wheelie case and a bag with me at the height of rush hour. This station used to be so dingy. But on the heels of the Eurostar came millions in investment, and the whole area has had something of a makeover, although the hustle and bustle are the same. Renovating buildings, renovating faces – both involve injecting new life into what was once old, tired. Yet even in the right hands, it can never lead to complete transfiguration – something will always remain of the original.
